Leif Hansen and 3XN win tender as main consultants for the building of a United Nations City in Copenhagen
CPH City & Port Development (By & Havn I/S) have selected Leif Hansen Engineering and 3XN as consultants on the coming "UN-City" at "Marmormolen", (the marble pier) in the harbor of Copenhagen.
The building of the UN-City aims to sustain and strengthen the presence and identity of the UN in Denmark. Leif Hansen and 3XN have created a building solution that supports the UN's wish for a joined construction uniting the Danish branches of the UN under one roof and underlining the vision of "One UN", while still allowing the branches to express their individual identities.
Lars Kragh, CEO at Leif Hansen Engineering, states:
"At Leif Hansen Engineering we are looking very much forward to heading - in close cooperation with 3XN - one of the most exciting building projects in the years to come. A new UN-City in the harbor of Copenhagen will be an amazingly challenging project, and as engineers, we are extremely dedicated to ensure that our client gets the best possible building solution by focusing on collaboration, build-ability, flexibility, sustainability and tight project management. We are very proud to be part of the building of a new "city" for an international organization that has the purpose to improve peoples' lives and upbringing all over the world."
The balance between openness/public interest and the high security requirements has played a key role in the design of the construction. "Soft" values (openness, logistics, working life/ family life) are combined with "hard" values (access roads, access to the buildings, security, construction, and zoning) resulting in a unified and well functioning building design. In addition, the balance between financial, social and environmental sustainability has played a key role.
"We have worked very determined with sustainability, e.g. the orientation of the construction towards the sun, wind, energy supply, recycling, and choice of materials, combined with total financial assessments ensuring that the construction will be built within the customer's, CPH City & Port Development, budget, which is a main concern".
The UN-City comprises buildings totaling approximately 30,000 m², with a possible later expansion of 15,000 m².
